Participants from developed countries are expected to cover their participation costs which include tuition, travel, accommodation, insurance and living expenses. However, there are a limited number of tuition waivers available which may be applied for on a competitive basis. If you wish to apply for a tuition waiver, please attach a cover letter to your application specifying your reasons.

Participants from Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, as well as those coming from emerging democracies worldwide can apply for financial aid. In case an applicants is accepted to two courses, financial aid is only available for attending one course. See the various financial aid packages below.

Tuition waiver The tuition fee is provided. Recipients have to cover their own insurance, travel, accommodation and living expenses. Hungarian participants with residence in Budapest should choose this category.

Partial Scholarship Includes tuition fee, accommodation and insurance. The recipients of the scholarship have to cover their travel and living expenses.

Full Scholarship Includes tuition fee, accommodation, a full or partial travel grant and insurance. The recipients of the scholarship have to cover their living expenses.

The Full Scholarships include a full or partial travel grant which can be applied for on a competitive basis and will be available in a limited number. The maximum travel grant awarded is EUR 1,160; visa costs and short domestic trips are not reimbursed. The citizens of the following countries are not eligible to apply for a travel grant: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and the western part of Ukraine.

The scholarships do not include insurance or living expenses, participants have to cover these on their own. Living expenses including local transportation and meals are estimated to be EUR 166 for two weeks.

As the number of fully funded scholarships available is limited, funding offered by institutions or individuals is welcome so that we can invite more well qualified applicants. When choosing the financial aid package, please consider if you or your institution can contribute to the program expenses. Faculty and Ph.D. students are advised to approach their home departments for travel grants; researchers may have research grants available which can cover their participation; professionals may turn to their employers to fund their training in SUN. While selection of applicants will be based on the academic merit of the applications, those willing to bear the participation costs fully or partially will be preferred in case of equally strong applications.

Total Law™ courses (Introductory / Advanced for Diploma / Advanced for Certificate)

Please note that the financial aid scheme for the Total Law™ courses is different from the general SUN one. There are few full scholarships available only to exceptional candidates, and some partial tuition waivers (see course details).

Introductory Course in European Union Law (where required):

The tuition fee also includes some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota, and some social activities. Participants should expect to contribute some costs toward additional social events.

The tuition fee is normally payable in full upon confirmation of acceptance of the CEU offer of a place of study in the advanced course. However, staggered payment can be arranged on a case-by-case basis for those participants who cannot pay the full fee at the time they confirm acceptance, providing that they pay a minimum of 20% tuition fees at the time of confirmation.

In the event of cancellation, CEU will refund the tuition fee as follows:

For cancellations before May 15, 2006—full refund

For cancellations after May 15, 2006—80% of the tuition fee.

For withdrawals from the program once courses have started, CEU will refund only the sessions which have not started at the time of the participant’s withdrawal.

Scholarships and Financial Support

CEU may offer up to four full scholarships, one for citizens of North American countries, one for citizens of Western European countries, one for citizens of Central and Eastern European countries and one for citizens from the rest of the world. 

In addition to these full scholarships, financial support in the form of a partial tuition waiver may be awarded at CEU’s discretion, on the basis of merit. Participants interested in one of the scholarship and/or tuition waiver should mark the relevant boxes in the Application Form and provide a letter of justification.
