Student Activities

General Information

CEU students have the opportunity to get involved in many social and extracurricular activities throughout the academic year. Most of these initiatives are based on student interests and specific requests. The Student Life Office and the Financial Aid Office provide logistical and/or financial support.

Normally, at the beginning of the academic year, a survey is made among students, asking them for their preferences. Following upon this various clubs are formed, e.g. drama club, literary club, special interest clubs. Students are encouraged to submit proposals for activities that would fit in with their busy academic schedules. For example, CEU would provide support to celebrate national and cultural holidays or help organize international events, dinners, or parties. In addition, there is a small exhibition hall on the first floor of Monument Building which during the past academic year showed photo exhibitions of pictures taken by several CEU students. In other cases, students participate in numerous activities organized by their department or program or by their faculty. Again, they can obtain support from the Student Life Office and the Financial Aid Office.

For students interested in sports, CEU provides the facilities of two Sports Centers: the one at the CEU Residence and Conference Center (Kerepesi Dormitory) and the downtown Sports Center serving as a complement, located in Nador u. 12. If there is sufficient demand, CEU organizes aerobics or yoga classes, games and tournaments.

For students resident in the Kerepesi Dormitory, CEU supports a system of electing Residence Advisors (RAs) for each floor. RAs collect ideas, organize student feedback, and maintain permanent contact with the dormitory management. The dormitory is also prepared to support a film club, a DVD rental system, sports tournaments, monthly national evenings and student-organized exhibitions.

Due to the relatively short time that most students spend in Budapest, many student activities start and end within the given academic year because the next student generation may be interested in other areas. The Student Counselor welcomes student ideas and suggestions and works with students to enhance the CEU living environment.

Student Union

To ensure adequate student representation and participation in the university's governance, the student body of CEU elects a Student Union every academic year. The Student Union is an independent body, which operates according to its written by-laws.

At the beginning of the academic year the Vice President for Student Services calls for the nomination and election of two representatives from each department. Departments with doctoral programs may elect one representative from the Master's level program and one from the doctoral program. Students of the Economics Master's program may elect one additional representative from either first or second year. The entire procedure is carried out by students. Logistical assistance, if needed, is provided by the department coordinators.

Student Union Room

A fully equipped and furnished room is provided for the needs of the Student Union. It is located in the Basement of Nador 9 building. The key to this room is held by the security staff at the Zrinyi u. gate, who must be given a list of the authorized Student Union members shortly after elections. Three spare keys are at the Student Union management's disposal.

Administrative Support

Student Services provides administrative support to the members of the Student Union. Requests and questions should be directed to Janka Jozsef, Student Counselor, Monument Building, Second floor, Room 203, Extension: 3119, jozsefj@ceu.hu.

Student Clubs and Activities

Welcome afternoon 2006

This informal event is an integral part of the orientation program organized on the last day of pre-session. The Academic Pro-Rector opened the afternoon where students met the different support units in a more relaxed setting. Information materials, brochures (tourist information, cultural programs) were distributed, student could sign up for clubs and activities, and they marked on a large world map where they are from.

The afternoon started with a vigorous show. The two dancers accompanied by three musicians introduced different Hungarian folk dances from within and outside Hungary. Then it was the students' turn! In front of the Auditorium they had a chance to learn a Hungarian dance!

During the Afternoon there were film screenings about Budapest and Hungary, and the film "Budapest-Retro" by Papp Gabor Zsigmond was shown in the Auditorium.

The Artemisszio Foundation organized a quiz titled "How much do you know about Budapest?", which many students successfully answered. The Alumni Tea-House was again a great social networking opportunity and the Fair Trade Coffee shop drew a lot of coffee-lovers.

Visiting the Nemzeti Szinhaz (National Theater)

More than a hundred students went to see an English-language performance of the Madhouse Theatre Company. The play is a lively comedy, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), which is a great success in the London West End as well as in Budapest.

The National Theater is located in a beautiful building near the Lagymanyosi bridge.

12th CEU Indoor Soccer Championship

The soccer tournament was held on 24th of March 2007 in the CEU Residence Center and brought great attention among the students. 7 teams participated in the event: Run Forest Run, Moxi Patu, San Juan, Utilizers, Eastern Block, Found- a- mental Group and The Masters of Disaster. Even the bad weather conditions, it was raining heavily at the beginning of the tournament, could not spoil the competitive spirit of the players. The games were very exciting as the teams consisted of players with very similar football skills. The winner was decided just after penalties. Players of the winning team: Igor Madzarevic, Artem Kuznetsov, Fuad Aslanov, John Christopolous, Gahraman Kazimov, Pavel Dikov- all MA Economics Department students and one Nationalism Studies student- Sanan Mirzaev. The title of the best player of the tournament went to Gahraman Kazimov from the winning team.

The event was sponsored by the CEU Sports Center and the Student Activity Fund.

Student organizers: Igor Madzarevic and Artem Kuznetsov, 1st year Economics students.

Student Activity Fund and Supported Projects

General Conditions:

CEU students to receive support for student-organized clubs and activities, based on an Executive Committee decision. A 5,000 euro budget is set aside from the annual budget to fund directly student activities in addition to the programs already sponsored by CEU (such as the Film Club, dance classes, exhibitions, etc.). A Committee has been set up for utilizing this money, comprised of members of the administration, Faculty and the Student Union.

The committee would like to encourage brief proposals (max. 500 words) from CEU students corresponding to the criteria for funding outlined below. Please include the detailed budget-request in the proposal.

The projects will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Please note that project evaluation and logistical arrangements require some time, so think well-ahead and submit your proposal in time, at least a month before the event. We cannot accept proposals a few days before the planned activity. The Committee announces the final decision within two weeks from submission of each project.

  • it is a one-time grant for each project, however, under exceptional circumstances a second funding request may be considered
  • a maximum 500 euros may be given to one project
  • project proposals are not theme restricted and can be submitted by any currently enrolled CEU student, members of the faculty, the Student Life Office or the CEU Residence Center; however activities to be funded should not promote personal hobbies or benefit single individual interests
  • projects should seek to enhance the prestige of CEU and the career objectives of CEU students
  • projects should seek to create a tradition at CEU, organize activities that could possibly be continued in the following years
  • the proper proposal should include:
    • a statement of the goals of the project
    • a description of the activities
    • a description of the potential contributions of the project to the CEU community
    • a detailed budget-request
  • organizers of all funded projects should account for the results of the activities and the money spent by filling in the relevant sample forms (to be provided by the committee)
  • activities intended for limited target groups of students (e.g. students from only one Department or program) cannot be granted sums larger than 200 euros.
  • recipients of the funding should be selected by a formal procedure (instituted within the group proposing the project)
  • projects that have expenses that exceed 500 euros should seek alternative sources of funding to supplement this funding
  • funding for publishing student academic works can be granted only after providing a recommendation from the Head of the Department in the relevant sphere of science.
  • travel grants and monetary compensation to visiting people are funded only partially and in cases of proven substantial benefits to the CEU community. If possible, the Student Activity Fund Committee may provide assistance in finding other sources for funding such expenses.
  • the Committee may decide that some services related to the project can be realized using the facilities of the University. In this case the Committee provides its support to arrange those instead of giving money.

Ice Skating Party '06

The tradition continues! For the 3rd time the Ice Skating party was organized in the City Park Ice Rink on February 8. After the regular opening hours when the general public left, the CEU community 'occupied' the whole ice rink.

Students, faculty, administrators and their invited guests, from beginners to pros, all had a lot of fun skating, chatting, drinking hot wine or just listening to the music. About 250-300 people attended the event.

Madame Butterfly in the Hungarian Opera
December 14, 7:00 p.m.

The last event before the winter break was a visit in the beautiful building of the Opera House. Fifty students went to see Puccini's opera. The Student Activity Fund covered the price of the tickets.

One of the highlights of a walk in the Andrássy Street is the beautiful Opera House, which was built in 1884 in Neo-Renaissance style and designed by Miklós Ybl. The exterior of the building is very impressive, and interior and especially the performance hall itself is the most impressive with the allegorical frescoes, stone carvings, painting and other decorations by famous artists (Bertalan Székely, Árpád Feszty, Károly Lotz.).

CEU Debating Society

CEU Debating Society was revived after a series of trainings and seminars in
public speaking and British Parliamentary debating format offered by alumna
Maja Nenadovic. Altogether 50 students took part in these trainings, and
once they were finished a small group of enthusiasts decided to organize
themselves into a debating society. Debates take place now on weekly basis,
as students are preparing for the small internal CEU tournament through
which they will elect two best speakers to represent them at the upcoming
European Universities Debating Championship 2006 held in March in Berlin,
Germany.

International Association for Political Science Students @ Central European University

IAPSS@CEU is open to all CEU students interested in issues related to political science. The goal of IAPSS@CEU is to promote a worldwide community of students interested in political science issues. Within CEU we want to support the organization of biannual in-house student conferences, an on-line student journal, and other activities. Also, as (soon to be) part of IAPSS-international, we want to promote the involvement of CEU students in international projects and especially to encourage CEU students to initiate projects in Central and Eastern Europe.

Human Rights Students' Initiative

This initiative was established by graduates of the Human Rights Program of the Department of Legal Studies. HRSI's main aim is to complement the formal academic training received by students at CEU with practical experiential learning about human rights through advocacy work, training and volunteer projects, and credit courses at the Department of Legal Studies.

Throughout the year, HRSI coordinates credited and non-credited internships for students with Budapest-based NGOs, arranges skill-building training workshops for students interested in pursuing careers in the NGO sector and runs non-formal youth education programs with the Council of Europe's Directorate of Youth and Sport. HRSI also runs non-formal education courses funded by the Council of Europe. Finally, HRSI greatly encourages students to launch initiatives of their own and provides as much support as it can to help them succeed.
