The Two Year MA aims to present students a wide range of theories and methods in sociology and social anthropology while examining their interaction and integration in the study of globalization and urban studies. The study of globalization and of urban studies is conceived in the department as both a material and a formal object. We study global and urban processes as such, but we also work with a variety of local and urban sites as windows onto the larger scale processes of globalization. The ‘global’ historically has been produced on other levels as well and grows in the interplay of various scales, of which the urban is a privileged one. We see the city as constitutive of the global and an important venue to explore the spatial dynamics of globalization and its consequences on the hierarchies of power and governance structures.
The Two Year MA has a strong research component. One semester is to be devoted to research for a thesis.
The Two Tear Program is recommended for those who wish to pursue a deeper research agenda with a marked interest in global and urban issues broadly understood. Similar intellectual agendas can be followed in the One Year Program as well but whereas a global and urban orientation is an option in the One Year Program, in our current Two Year Program such direction is a must.
Eligibility & application for the Master's Program
According to general CEU rules, candidates with a 3-year BA degree are normally considered for the Two Year Program. Admission into the One Year Program is possible in suitable cases but a request for exception should be indicated in the cover letter or the beginning of the resume.
In addition to the general CEU admissions requirements (see Part V; General Admissions Requirements), applicants to the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology must provide a 500-word research proposal. The topic should fall within the thematic focus of the Two Year MA. Previous work on the subject as well as research experience in related fields, if any, should also be mentioned. Inclusion of a writing sample in English, (preferably a chapter from the undergraduate thesis) is required. Previous undergraduate training in sociology and/or anthropology is an advantage but not a requirement.
