DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION

The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology offers critically innovative MA and PhD programs that integrate both disciplines while accommodating a diversity of theoretical perspectives. Our combination of Sociology and Social Anthropology leads to insightful and potentially groundbreaking research and teaching, presenting multi-scalar and critical perspectives on a series of different issues. The theoretical insights and research questions generated by a combined perspective on the disciplines are, we believe, not only innovative but highly important to understanding contemporary social phenomena. We are committed then to academic excellence, to the development of critical and innovative thinking and to rigorous and socially-committed research.

Our MA and PhD programmes are taught by research-active faculty. The department is committed to fostering student learning, our classes are active and engaging areas of critical discussion. The Department stands out also in the area of student support: we are highly committed to the academic nurturing of our students, and this is done in both formal and informal ways within the classroom and outside. We are also committed to developing faculty-student joint research schemes.

Research and teaching expertise of our faculty include (but are not restricted to) migration studies, postcolonialism, studies of globalisation, political and economic sociology, urban studies and sociologies of culture. In many of these fields, research undertaken by faculty has been recognized internationally. We pride ourselves on having a highly research active faculty, with tangible benefits in terms of teaching as well as research guidance for our students.

Our faculty and students have a successful record in attracting research funding international bodies. In recent years, research and studies at the department have been funded by the Marie Curie program, the EU Framework Program, the Wenner Gren Foundation and the National Science Foundation. The Department also runs student exchange programmes with other universities in Europe and the United States.
