CEU is striving to become a high-level scholarly, research-intensive university, aiming at academic excellence. At the same time CEU continues to adhere to the values embraced by the Open Society network. Excellence and engagement can coexist only if the university pursues its academic and socio-political aims supported by in-depth research.

The influence of social awareness on research can be seen in the problems we choose to tackle. Readiness for intellectual risk-taking and for radical rethinking of foundations is the hallmark of any high-level research. Yet, this can also be strongly encouraged by creating a context for academic work in which the values of open society, democracy and critical, reflective thinking are cultivated.
