Summerschool - Welfare States of Eastern and Western Europe - June 27- July 5, 2011 Budapest, Hungary - Anil Duman, Course Director, organizes this summer course that targets PhD-students who have started or are about to start a project related to welfare and social policy in Eastern and Western Europe. Topics that will be addressed are the comparative analysis of welfare state and social policy reform, role of social actors, policies for work and welfare reconciliation, social protection, immigrant integration, welfare regimes and labor markets. The course also aims to address methodological issues of comparative research in East and West European welfare and social policy.
A methodology workshop entitled "How to deal with time in comparative social research?" took place on Thursday, December 11, 2008 between 4:30 and 6:30 pm in the CEU Auditorium. Five professors were speaking and debating the issue from different methodological approaches: Bob Hancke (LSE and CEU/PolSci), Levente Littvay (CEU), Carsten Schneider (CEU/Polsci), Gabor Toka (CEU/PolSci) and Claudius Wagemann (SUM).
On December 13 2008 between 4 pm-6 pm a Professional Development Workshop about "Tips and Tricks on Entering the Labor Market with a PhD" was organized in the CEU Auditorium. Two recently hired faculty from the department - Levente Littvay and Andres Moles shared their experiences with applying to post-docs and to academic positions. Cristina Balint-Nagy from the CEU Career Office brought in the non-academic perspective.
We are glad to inform you that the call to apply for the next INTUNE winter school on “Multilevel Modelling in Political Science”, that will be held at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, on January 12-14 2009, is now available. The Department of Political Science at the Central European University is part of the INTUNE consortium thus tuition and accommodation costs and travel expenses will be reimbursed up to 250€ for all CEU participants. The Department hosted September 22 – 23, 2008 the European Doctoral Workshop in Industrial Relations that saw the participation Central European University, Budapest; IAAEG, University of Trier; London School of Economics; University of Amsterdam; University of Milan; and the Warwick Business School. Miklos Sukosd (POLS) and the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at CEU will bring together scholars, policy experts, NGO campaigners, ICT activists and media professionals from all over Europe for the workshop "Data Retention on the Internet: Challenges for small, alternative and citizen-based Internet Service Providers". Participants will analyze new policies on data retention and discuss strategies for maintaining and enhancing privacy and free communication. The Department hosted a Qualitative Data Analysis workshop, held by Liz Spencer from University of Essex on 4-5 April 2007. This two day instensive workshop was designed to give participants an overview of different approaches to qualitative data analysis, introducing key principles and approaches. Participants were able to analyse samples of interview data using both 'manual' and computer assisted methods.
The 2007 Annual Doctoral Conference of the Department of Political Science ran 2-3 April 2007.
