Post Doctoral Fellowship on the “Political Economy of Global Finance” (deadline: May 2, 2011)

The Political Economy Research Group (PERG) at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship on the “Political Economy of Global Finance” to begin in the fall of 2011.
The ongoing global financial crisis has demonstrated a clear need to revise established paradigms in comparative political economy. In particular, dominant approaches in this field have underestimated the degree of “financialization,” that is the predominance of financial markets, motives, institutions, and elites in the operation and governance of the economy in all forms of capitalism. Therefore PERG seeks a post-doctoral researcher with a specialty in the international political economy of global finance, financial development, or related topics.
In addition to working on his or her research and publication agenda, the post-doctoral fellow will be expected to attend and actively engage in PERG seminar meetings, participate in collaborative research projects with PERG members, give a public lecture at CEU, and contribute to the organization of lectures or a workshop with renowned scholars in the field. If interested, the fellow will also have the opportunity to engage in research seminars at multiple departments and potentially teach a course.
PERG is a highly active, collaborative research group of CEU doctoral students and faculty from four departments - Political Science, International Relations and European Studies, Public Policy, and Economics - working in the area of political economy. The post-doctoral fellow will benefit from engaging in a very active and motivating community of senior and junior researchers that is focused on providing feedback on colleagues’ work and engaging in collaborative research. The research profile of PERG members includes many dimensions of political economy, such as labor markets, social mobilization, migration, fiscal and social policy, and transnational capitalism. The fellow may also utilize PERG’s contacts and networks within and beyond CEU that relate to the Political Economy of Global Finance.
The two-year position is created within the framework of the “CEU 20th Anniversary Postdoctoral Fellowships” to commemorate 20 years of academic activity at CEU. The successful candidate will receive a competitive stipend and will be eligible for a health plan.
The application package should consist of a single PDF file with
• a short letter of motivation stating the candidate’s qualifications and reasons for interest in the fellowship,
• a research proposal outlining current and future research (2-3 pages),
• a CV,
• the contact information of three references (including e-mail, phone number, mailing address, and relationship to the applicant), and
• one writing sample (published article, work-in progress, or a dissertation chapter).
Informal enquiries may be addressed to perg@ceu.hu. Please send your complete application package to: advert@ceu.hu - including job code in subject line: 2011/023 CEU is an equal opportunity employer.
Application deadline: May 2, 2011

Call for Application (deadline: 31 Oct 2007)
Workshop Series: The Enlargement of the Single European Market

The workshop series (sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council) concentrates on the impact of EU enlargement on the political, social and economic agenda of the EU. More specifically, it analyses the effects that enlargement has on the pan-European discussion regarding the Single Market policy framework and the concept of a European Social Model. Events held in the framework of the project focus on the contribution of Central and Eastern European countries, in defining priorities of Single Market Reform and socio-economic development in the EU.
Issued to be analyzed throughout the workshop series include:
• The completion of the Single European Market - the EU policy framework
The policy approach of the revised Lisbon Strategy and the Internal Market Strategy and its impact on the domestic economic reform within the member states.
• The transformation process in the new member states
The extent to which the EU’s Single European Market policy framework, as well as aspirations to meet the stability criteria of EMU influence the domestic reform agenda in new member states.
• Labor market reform and migration in the enlarged EU
Effects of the changes in the nature of employment on national employment systems and active labor market reform programs developed by individual member states.
• The European Social Model- Old versus New Europe?
Is the EU heading towards a new multiplicity of social models and can the social model proposed by Lisbon be more than a deregulated free trade area without national borders?
The project spans over the period of February - September 2008.

A call for applications is now addressed to CEU PhD students to participate in the workshop series and to present a research paper at one of the workshops.

Proposals should address some of the following themes with regard the 12 new member states, on an individual or comparative basis:
• Which are the major trends in the political, economic and social transformation in the new member states?
• Who are the main domestic and supranational drivers behind these trends?
• How does the existing EU policy framework (Lisbon, Internal Market Strategy, EMU) influence the transformation processes in the new member states and are the latter in return modifying the EU’s policy agenda?
• Has the expansion of membership towards 27 countries made it more difficult to determine common characteristics for a European Social Model?

Proposals should be received by October 31 and should include:
• a paper abstract of approx. 1,000 - 1,500 words
• title of proposed paper
• author’s CV

The proposals will serve as a basis for a round of interviews to be conducted with selected students. Based on the outcome of the interviews we will select one candidate to take part in the seminar series throughout the duration of the project. Four seminars will be held between February - September 2008 in England, Poland and Hungary. Costs associated with participation at the events will be covered. The selected researcher will have a chance to join a group of academics and elites from business, politics and interest groups across Europe who aim to encourage a new pan-European dialogue on the future of the Single European Market in the Community of 27 members. The candidate will finalize his/her research paper based on the lessons of some of the seminars by approximately June 2008. (approximate length 13,000 - 15,000 words). Publication of the academic paper is to be expected in a special journal issue and/or a jointly edited book with Routledge publishers as part of its Business and Management book series.
Other proposals may be selected for presentation at the seminar held in Budapest in the fall of 2008.
