"The Nationalism Studies Department is a unique program that offers students a possibility to design their personal research benefiting the interdisciplinary scope of the courses offered. At the same time, the students are introduced to the theoretical works in the fields of history, political science, sociology, and anthropology that pertain to the questions of identity constructions, cultural memory, national conflicts, and conflict resolution methods. It is located in the region where these texts have direct application, in the region which provides ample material for case studies. Independent-thinking students with strong research agenda will benefit from the current structure of the program as a separate department."

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The CEU fellowship program has been a direct means of supporting the university's mission to promote and sustain open societies, democracy, rule of law, tolerance, and political and cultural pluralism in the CEE/fSU region. In 2000, to better understand the main economic, political, social and cultural phenomena taking place in the region in a wider, comparative perspective, and to address the challenges resulting from the world's expanding democratization, CEU extended its financial aid program worldwide, with a continuing focus on individuals and organizations in the CEE/fSU region, and on students in emerging democracies.

While more recently the university has diversified its financial aid offers to students-by developing several types of financial aid packages awarded on the basis of merit--the majority of CEU students continue to receive a full fellowship which covers educational costs and also provides a living support package. In particular, the university seeks to support fully its doctoral students, by awarding the CEU fellowship for three and a half years. For Master's students, the financial aid program may cover the full tuition fee, or provide a partial tuition waiver. In many cases, the university also provides a partial living support package.

The Department of Nationalism Studies offers North American undergraduate students a unique opportunity to take master-level courses with the CEU students who come from more than 70 countries and the faculty from more than 30 states. The Department of Nationalism Studies was established by CEU with the aim of engaging students in empirical and theoretical study of issues of nationalism and self-determination, problems of state-formation, ethnic conflict and minority protection; and the related theme of globalization. Drawing upon the uniquely supranational milieu of CEU, the program encourages a critical and non-sectarian study of nationalism. Students are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary study of nationalism, a subject that is inherently and fundamentally interdisciplinary. For this reason, the international teaching staff has been assembled to represent a wide range of disciplines and expertise relevant to the study of Nationalism, including History, Social Theory, Economics, Legal Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, International Relations, and Political Science. The program offers a wide selection of courses that provide a complex theoretical grounding in problems associated with nationhood, nationalism, and ethnic conflicts, combined with advanced training in the methodology of applied social science. Additional courses focus on placing problems of nationalism in the context of economic and political transition, as well as constitution-building in post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe, with a comparative outlook on regime transitions outside the region.
