Research Methods, February, 29 - March 3, 1996. 2 p.m.

The importance of prosopography as a "new" approach to social history is now well established and not questioned any longer. But there is still an ongoing debate what use should be made of prosopography, whether it is a proper historical method or just a combination of techniques which vary according to the question whether prosopography replaces biography, whether prosopography favours a pessimistic view of the historian - just to mention some of the main questions.

The object of the course is to give an introduction into the techniques of prosopography - including how to set up a computer data base - to demonstrate the advantages and the limits of (medieval) prosopography, and to discuss - among others - the above-mentioned issues.

Timetable

1. February 29 Sources and objectives of prosopography. Bibliography
2. March 4 Genealogy and biography - as prerequisite and complement of prosopography
3. March 7 Identification of persons and setting up of biographical notices
4. March 11 How to construct a group - use of a data base
5. March 14 Discussion of recent examples of prosopographical studies. Conclusion.
