Dear Students and Faculty, Daniel Glasscock (Second Year MS Student) and Péter Maga (PhD Candidate) will deliver a two part lecture on Tao's Proof of Szemerédi's Theorem on Friday, December 3, 2010, at 3 p.m. and Thursday, December 9, 2010, 3 p.m., in Room 310/A (Zrinyi u. 14, 1051 Budapest, Third Floor) Brief Introduction
Theorem (Szemerédi 1975) Let $k \ge $ be an integer and $0 < \delta \le 1$. There exists an integer $N(k,\delta) \ge 1$ such that if $N \ge N(k,\delta)$ and $A \subset N$ has density at least $\delta$ (i.e. $|A|/|N| \ge \delta$), then $A$ contains an arithmetic progression of length $k$. "A quantitative ergodic theory proof of Szemerédi's theorem" will be presented. The lectures will focus on the specific tools needed in Tao's proof and will assume no previous knowledge of ergodic theory or Tao's work, however the second lecture will build on the first.
