WELCOME
to the website of the Department
of Mathematics and its Applications of the Central European University (CEU).
Our department is privileged
to offer two international degree programs, taught in English:
the Master of Science (MS) Program in Applied Mathematics
and the Doctoral (PhD) Program in Mathematics and its Applications.
Both programs have been accredited by the New York State Education Department, United States. They have been
designed in accordance with the structure and standards specified by
the Bologna process, while at the same time maintaining American
features. Thus, our programs are fully recognized and highly
appreciated throughout the world.
The department has been evolving into a major
center for research and education. Our partnership with the Alfréd
Rényi Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences contributes
to the department's successful development. Cooperation with local and foreign
renowned scholars and institutions is strongly pursued and encouraged. It is worth mentioning
that, over the years, the department's faculty has been complemented
with scholars from abroad, such as: Carsten Carstensen (Humboldt University,
Berlin), Constantin Corduneanu (University of Texas at Arlington), Eduard
Feireisl (Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague). We also host visiting researchers as well as visiting non-degree students who
come here to spend one semester or more.
Our MS
students are mainly prepared for
careers in industry, corporations, banks, research institutes,
governmental and EU institutions. At the end of their MS studies,
they may embark on various PhD programs, either in
Mathematics or in related fields. On the other hand, our PhD students
are well prepared for positions in academic and research institutions,
but they have access to a wide range of job opportunities outside
the academic world, as well.
Mathematics students have a unique opportunity to work under the supervision of
outstanding experts in various fields of mathematics and its
applications. They can also benefit from the wonderful CEU environment,
which allows close cooperation with other CEU departments. The
rich scientific life of Budapest is also beneficial to our
students.
Currently we have students coming from fourteen countries: Belarus,
Botswana, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Canada, Hungary, India, Madagascar,
Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Switzerland, Turkey, USA. I would
be happy if the geographical and cultural area of student
recruitment extended to other countries. Our department offers a
wonderful framework for educational and research cooperation,
intercultural exchanges, and healthy social life.

I invite you to navigate through our departmental website.
