Program in Economic and Legal Studies
The program in Economic and Legal Studies is offered jointly by the Department of Legal Studies and the Department of Economics. Economics provides a tool for studying how legal rules affect the way people and businesses behave, so that understanding the economic aspects of legal problems has become an important part of a lawyer's education. Similarly, for a person trained as economist knowledge of legal issues has come to be increasingly important.
The program is structured in the following way:
1. Length of the Programme:
A 12 month, full-time programme. There will be 10 months of courses and 2 months for writing the thesis.
2. Thesis:
The thesis must be on a topic involving both law and economics. Each thesis will have two supervisors, one from each department.
3. Pre-requisites/Admission requirement:
The Program will accept both those with a BA in Economics (or equivalent) and those with an LL.B. For admission of students holding an LL.B., the admission requirements of the Legal Studies Department will apply. Students with an economics background apply to the Economics Department and should write an essay explaining why they wish to study law and economics, and include it in the application package.
4. Fee:
EUR 7,000 (Applicants to this program are not eligible for CEU financial aid and tuition waiver)
5. Structure of the program:
In order to graduate from the M.A./LL.M Program in Economic and Legal Studies, a student must successfully complete a total of 38 credits of study, of which 16 credits from the specified mandatory courses (9 credits in the Department of Economics, 7 credits in the Department of Legal Studies), 10 credits from other courses offered to MA/LL.M. in Economic and Legal Studies students (5 from Economics, 5 from Legal Studies Department) and 12 credits earned from the dissertation.
