Credit requirements and courses:
The total credit requirement for the S.J.D. is six (6), to be obtained before submission of the doctoral thesis. Four (4) credits are to be taken within the doctoral seminar program and two (2) credits are to be taken from courses offered at CEU, as agreed with the thesis adviser. Upon the request of the thesis advisor the Program Chair may agree to the increase of the number of credit courses taken from the CEU offering in lieu of mandatory doctoral seminars. A minimum of four (4) credits is to be obtained during the first year of studies in the S.J.D. Program. Special doctoral courses are mandatory upon designation by the Program Chair.
The following doctoral seminars are mandatory (not all doctoral seminars are credited):
1.The Visiting Professors Seminar Series. Active participation at a minimum of eight (8) contact meetings is required for one credit. Distinguished international faculty members and other visitors provide topics (e.g. work in progress or recent published articles) for discussion.
2. Great Books Seminar Series. Students (under the supervision of 3 rd year candidates and professors) write reports on selected books (or short essays on specific issues addressed by the book) and present them for discussion. Eight (8) sessions are about the common core material (list of books will be provided by the Department), six (6) sessions are devoted to special area classics. At least two area classics are to be taken from the “other stream” (1 credit). The credit is granted once the student satisfied fourteen (14) sessions.
3. Work in Progress Seminar Series. Students present their research results. First and second year students present book/case reviews and comment on senior articles/chapters related to the topic of their dissertation. Third year candidates present a dissertation chapter for discussion (distributed in advance). At least three of the meetings shall be on papers presented by the “other stream”.
4. The interdisciplinary seminars. To be determined by the Program Chair.
5. Participation at CEU workshops and conferences. Every year each student is expected to attend one of the scholarly workshops or conferences organized by the department, or/with the consent of Program Chairs outside the department. A related research paper can be written for credit (this credit is counted as a seminar credit).
6. Introduction to doctoral research and thesis writing (methodology colloquia). The colloquia are provided by faculty. Some of the meetings will be held separately for the two programs (no credit).
Other obligations:
1. Publications (one per academic year). Book reviews and conference reports qualify as publication. At least one publication has to be in an English language review (journal). Students are to provide anonymous peer review.
2. Teaching assistance. By September 19, candidates have to apply as teaching assistants with a professor.
3. Participation at the advanced essay writing seminar offered by the Language Teaching Center. A remedial course is to be taken in case the final test result is not satisfactory.
4. The comprehensive (oral) exam must be passed, as well as the thesis structure and the chapter submitted must be accepted by the respective Program Chair, by the beginning of the 15th month of the program the latest. Candidates who failed the oral exam, or whose thesis structure and submitted chapter have not been accepted, are not eligible to continue their S.J.D. studies.
