For Master's Students, For Doctoral Students, Externally Funded Scholarships Administered by CEU, Other Scholarship Funds
1.1. CEU Fellowship Awards for Master’s students come in two packages: a Full Fellowship and a Partial Fellowship. In both cases, award recipients are eligible for a monthly stipend and accommodation in the CEU Residence Center for the duration of their degree program.
1.1.a. The Full CEU Fellowship : covers tuition and medical insurance. In addition, full fellowship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of 90,750 HUF and accommodation in the CEU Residence Center, which is covered directly by the university. The monthly stipend is calculated to cover essential costs. Students need to budget additionally for travel, recreation, and incidentals, which can vary with the individual. 1.1.b. The Partial CEU Fellowship : covers tuition and medical insurance. In addition, partial fellowship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend supplement of 33,000 HUF and accommodation in the CEU Residence Center, which is covered directly by the university. The monthly stipend supplement is calculated to cover the cost of meals. Students need to budget additionally for educational and daily costs, including—but not limited to— transportation, readers, travel, recreation, and other sundries, which can vary with the individual. Fellowship Recipients have the option to decline accommodation in CEU’s Residence Center . In such cases, however, CEU does not cover the costs of alternative accommodation.
1.2. Full and Partial Tuition Waiver Packages
In addition to the fellowship packages, Central European University awards financial aid in the form of a full tuition waiver and partial tuition waivers ranging from 50% to 80%. Recipients of the full or partial Tuition Waiver packages are not automatically provided with accommodation in the CEU Residence Center. They are eligible to request a room on a space-availability basis, for which they will be expected to cover their costs directly.
1.2.a. Full Tuition Waiver. This award covers tuition and provides medical insurance. Recipients of a Full Tuition Waiver are expected to cover their rent, food and personal expenses for the duration of the academic year. 1.2.b. Partial Tuition Waiver-80%. The Partial Tuition Waiver covers 80 percent of the tuition. It also provides medical coverage. Students are expected to pay 20% of their tuition and to cover their rent, food and personal expenses for the duration of the academic year. 1.2.c. Partial Tuition Waiver-70%. The Partial Tuition Waiver covers 70 percent of the tuition. It also provides medical coverage. Students are expected to pay 30% of their tuition and to cover their rent, food and personal expenses for the duration of the academic year. 1.2.d. Partial Tuition Waiver-60%. The Partial Tuition Waiver covers 60 percent of the tuition. It also provides medical coverage. Students are expected to pay 40% of their tuition and to cover their rent, food and personal expenses for the duration of the academic year. 1.2.e. Partial Tuition Waiver-50%. The Partial Tuition Waiver covers 50 percent of the tuition. It also provides medical coverage. Students are expected to pay 50% of their tuition and to cover their rent, food and personal expenses for the duration of the academic year. All Master’s students are required to pay a Student Enrollment Fee of 200 Euro per academic year.
Students admitted into CEU doctoral degree programs are eligible to receive a full CEU Doctoral fellowship for up to three years. Effective 2007/2008, the university is pleased to announce a significant increase of the doctoral fellowship package.
The Full CEU Doctoral Fellowship covers tuition and medical insurance. In addition, full fellowship recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of 182,000 HUF calculated to cover educational and accommodation costs (Economics PhD students receive a monthly stipend of 250,000 HUF). Doctoral students are not automatically provided with accommodation in the CEU Residence Center. They are eligible to request a room on a space-availability basis, for which they will be expected to cover their costs directly.
Doctoral students who receive funding from state sources or other organizations are required to declare that they are supported externally. For the duration of their external grant, such students are not automatically eligible to receive financial support from CEU.
Additionally, in those limited cases in which a student wishes to keep his/her employment simultaneously with their studies, the student must request permission from their department. CEU may request full or partial tuition payment and will expect the student to cover his/her living costs.
All doctoral students are required to pay a Student Enrollment Fee of 240 Euro per academic year.
CEU awards and administers a number of externally funded scholarships, such as scholarships from the Hungarian State or the European Commission, or private donors and organizations. These scholarships normally cover the costs of tuition and medical insurance and provide monthly stipend determined by the funding body. Amounts vary from 500 to 1,000 Euro per month.
Students on Externally Funded Scholarships, administered by CEU, are not automatically provided with accommodation in the CEU Residence Center. They are eligible to request a room on a space-availability basis, for which they will be expected to cover their costs directly.
All students are required to pay a Student Enrollment Fee (Master’s: 200 Euro per academic year; doctoral: 240 Euro per academic year), unless special donor conditions apply.
Every year CEU raises a number of scholarships from alumni,
private and governmental sources, foundations and corporations.
Decisions on special scholarship awards are made by the respective
department on the basis of outstanding academic merit. No special
application form is necessary for such scholarships. Applicants
are notified in their acceptance letter if they are also recipients
of a special individual scholarship.
In addition to the financial aid packages outlined previously,
applicants may request to be considered for a CEU Alumni Scholarship.
Alumni Scholarships are awarded to students in financial need, and
with a proven record of leadership in extracurricular activities,
community service and civic engagement. The number and the amount
of CEU Alumni Scholarships awarded each year depend on the overall
merit of the applicants. In most cases, CEU Alumni Scholarships
are awarded to help cover the costs of living (previously, amounts
have varied between 1,000 and 2,000 EURO per annum).
To apply for a CEU Alumni Scholarship, applicants must indicate
so on the On-line Application Form and submit a one-page statement
outlining:
- their record of leadership in extracurricular activities, community
service and civic engagement (e.g. serving on the student council,
volunteering for an NGO, etc),
- their plans for future volunteer or civic engagement, and, perhaps,
involvement with the local CEU Alumni Chapter, and
- their financial need for the scholarship.
This statement must also include the applicant's name, and the
department(s) to which he/she is applying. It must be mailed together
with the other application documents. Applicants must be prepared
to substantiate their record of volunteer or civic engagement through
additional references or documentation in cases where this is not
supported by their resume, references, or academic records.
An applicant's decision to apply for an Alumni Scholarship will
not influence the CEU departmental decisions on financial aid. CEU
Alumni Scholarships will only be used to increase an applicant's
funding and will not replace funding awarded by CEU departments.
