Banking and Stipends

Banking for CEU Fellowship Recipients

For security and convenience reasons, CEU does not disburse stipends in cash. Fellowship students receive their monthly stipend in Hungarian forints (HUF) by bank transfer. At the beginning of the academic year, CEU assists students with opening a bank account with one selected bank (Inter-Europa Bank); students will receive a bank card provided the Financial Aid & Residential Life Office questionnaire is returned on time. Alternatively, students may, if they wish, open an account with another bank in Hungary using their own funds or cash transferred by CEU as a stipend, but CEU cannot offer individual assistance. Detailed information on banking is provided by the Budget and Finance Office.

Stipends

The Budget and Finance Office (BFO) pays stipends to students based on the lists provided by the Financial Aid & Residential Life Office each month. These lists contain the names of students who are entitled to receive stipends for the coming month, the amount of the stipend and the approvals of the relevant Department Coordinator and Financial Aid Officer. The stipend is transferred to the student's IEB account by the 4th day of each month.

All payments to students are managed through a transfer into their HUF account. Payments include stipends, travel grants, research grants, etc. In cases of travel abroad, students are responsible for converting the stipend/grant into the relevant foreign currency through their IEB bank account.

If a student is absent from CEU, stipend payments can be advanced in HUF for a maximum of three months. For advance payments of a stipend for more than three months, the student must document the request and obtain the department's endorsement that this absence is a part of his/her study plan.

Long-term Scholarship Recipients
These are doctoral students receiving the Doctoral Research Support Grant at a foreign institution for up to six months. Their subsistence funding is awarded in EUR. In addition to purchasing their ticket, CEU provides an advance payment of up to 500 EUR for the purposes of visa and settle-in cash after arrival. Any subsequent grant payments are wired in installments in EUR into the student's bank account in the country of temporary residence.
