The project of CEU's Curriculum Resource Centre entitled 'Changing the learning/teaching paradigm in the post- communist higher education through experiments in the scholarship of teaching and learning' has been selected for the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) - Institutional Leadership Program.
The participation the Carnegie Leadership Program gives us an opportunity to integrate further the concept of scholarship of teaching into our work internally at CEU, in the region we work with, and through our cooperation with our partners. We would like to strengthen our capacity to act as leaders in our region and at our institution in supporting scholarly approaches to teaching, integration of teaching and research and scholarship of teaching through our concept of the ‘scholar in the classroom’. Participating in the program will help us develop further our focus and would be a significant learning experience for us practitioners of higher education responsible for training young faculty from the region and supporting models of good practice in teaching and curriculum design.
In brief, the participation in the Carnegie Leadership Program will result in:
The first SoTL Writing Residence took place in July 2006 (3-7) at CEU with a group of faculty graduating from the Course Portfolio Pilot Project and was facilitated by Joanna Renc-Roe and Richard Gale. The group consisted of 10 faculty-alumni of the Pilot Course Portfolio project. The papers produced by the faculty will be available on this website.
The event was started by a Public lecture of Richard Gale (Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Higher Education Program), July 04, 2006, entitled "Understanding the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" with an introduction by Sophie Howlett (CEU, Dean of Special and Extension Programs)
The Convening in Washington in November 2006 was very useful in integrating us into the Carnegie Program and finding out how our colleagues in the thematic group see some of the many connections between SoTL and graduate education. Our partners in the Graduate Education Theme are University College Cork, Association of American Geographers, CITRL Network, Howard University , Michigan State University and Rutgers University .
The convening was also a welcome opportunity to get integrated into the wider Carnegie community. We had a productive debate within our group realising multiple ways that we each link postgraduate education with SoTL. We had a productive debate within our group realising multiple ways that we each link postgraduate education with SoTL. We agreed to meet in Ireland (Cork) in 2007 and in US (Washington) in 2008.
Following the convening the CEU team also participated in the annual ISSOTL conference (November 9-12, 2006).
