Course description:

The course of "Urban and Regional Sociology" is devoted to studying the urban style of life in connection to regional development, different social values, ways of thought and in this context social structure, in particular in the period of transition to market economy taking place in the Republic of Moldova. The course attempts to reveal the impact of the city as an economical, political, administrative and cultural center and the process of urbanization as a major process of contemporary society in the transformation of our society.

The course follows-up to help students to understand:

  1. Theoretical aspects of the complex and contradictory processes of urbanization and regional development;

  2. How to approach these processes in the context of the Republic of Moldova’s realities, which have to be seen in comparison with other countries from the former Soviet System and also with countries from West Europe, which the Republic of Moldova has wanted to be integrated with.

In this course students will have the possibility to study the basic conceptual framework of a specific problematic field, and also they will use a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to understand and solve urban and regional problems. In this condition students have to apply the methods and analytical procedures studied at courses of "Methods and Tools of Sociological Research", "Branch Sociology", "Economical Statistics", "Mathematical Demography" and other course studied within "Management" faculty such as "Analyze of Economic Activities", "Economic Prognoses" etc.

The course is based on a combination of theoretical classes, seminaries, lab applications, field applications, elaboration of essays that have to content variants of the solutions, the prognoses and the calculations on waiting effects. This course will be statistically documented and then it will be passed on to content analyzing of legal and juridical documentation of the different aspects of organization of urban life.
