AIM OF THE COURSE:

This course is intended for 4-th year students of the Cultural Studies Department.

The course is aimed at:

teaching the theoretical fundamentals for studies in the XXI century of young people’s culture in Kuban region of Russia;

developing students’ abilities for independent sociological research in the area of local (Kuban) young people’s culture.

Final requirements: Students must acquire understanding of the principles of post-transitology studies of Kuban young people’s culture and develop their abilities to make independent research in the subject under study.

 

ROLE OF THE COURSE IN THE OVERALL DEGREE CURRICULUM:

The course further promotes the preparation of specialists in such important area of Russian sociological studies as Local (Kuban) Young People’s Culture.

The course is interdisciplinary. It is based on the knowledge of such subjects as Sociology, Philosophy, Culturology, and the Culture of Kuban region.

Course volume: 24 hours, one semester.

Lectures – 16 hours;

Seminars – 4 hours;

Workshop – 2 hours;

The final students’ conference – 2 hours.

COURSE CONTENT

Theme 1. Introduction: The young people’s culture of Kuban region of Russia from the beginning of the XXI century as a subject of sociological study.

The young people’s culture of Kuban at the border of XX-XXI centuries. The end of totalitarian socialism history and disintegration of traditional socialist culture. Difficulties and vagueness of social changes as a source of transitology approach in the study of society and it’s culture. The limitation of transitology approach as a position, accenting the moment of vagueness in the elements of the subject under sociological study.

The ending of the social-economical reconstruction period in Russia and in the Kuban region as a source of insufficiency of transitological approach. The necessity of positive-sociological research of new society and it’s culture. The idea of coming into being of open democratic society of global mankind as a methodological support in positive studying of the subject of young people’s culture of Kuban at the beginning of the XXI century.

Theme 2. The theoretical fundamentals of sociological studying of modern youth culture of Kuban.

World outlook and methodology of postmodernism and the realities of young people’s culture of Kuban at the beginning of the XXI century. The culture of a self-determinating personality and of the personalizing society as the central point in sociological study of modern young people’s culture of Kuban. The turn of sociological analyses from abstractions of traditional Soviet sociology to surveying the concrete specifics of the pluralistically mosaic young people’s culture.

The philosophical theory as an instrument of post-transitological sociological analysis of young people’s culture specifics. The necessity of radical rejection of the traditional Marxist approach to studying the subject of modern Kuban young people’s culture. The principle insufficiency of the Marxist sociological method for studying the specifics of the modern young people’s culture of Kuban.

The insufficiency of empirical methodology for research in the specifics of modern culture. Existential bases of a person’s cultural self-determination. The role of hermeneutic methodology in studying the mosaic culture of the XXI century. A sociologist as a scientist and artist, virtually modeling the culture. The modern youth culture of Kuban as an interdisciplinary subject.

Theme 3. The realities of modern youth culture of Kuban as a subject of sociological studies.

The birth of "New Man", establishing by his existence the ideal of absolute personal freedom as the main fact of modern young people’s culture of Kuban. The radical "revolt" of youth against the system of traditional aesthetic, moral, cultural values beings impended on them. The conflict of traditional and untraditional cultures. The problem of compatibility of the cultures of "father’s" and "children’s" generations.

The individualistic and narcissical tendencies in the culture of the young people’s generation. An individual, losing the sense of his/her own existence as a reverse of the freedom within the "revolt". The problem of existential choice. Counter-culture and ideology of free personal self-determination, opposed to the collectivist values of life. The mosaics and atomization in the radical wing of modern young people’s culture of Kuban. The tendencies of globalization in young people’s culture.

Theme 4. The social-economical, political and spiritual premises of the

realities of modern young people’s culture of Kuban.

Inadmissibility of separating cultural phenomena from their basic life and social sources in the developing society. Fundamental influence of globalization of economical, political and spiritual life of mankind upon the culture of youth. The Russia and the globalising mankind: the downfall of totalitarian socialism and the principle turn to an open democratic society. The strategy of globalization as the most important vector of development of Russia in the XXI century.

Globalization, personalization of society and essential character of rejection of economical, ethnical, religious and cultural reticence of nations as related to humanity. The specific role of youth in overcoming reticence and in the transition of mankind to open society. The "revolt of youth and the ideology of counter-culture as a radical form of outer expression of transition to positive open democratic society of global mankind.

The specific forms of manifestation of the "youth’s revolt" in the local setting of Kuban. Rock-culture, sexual deviations, a personal search for the persons one’s "unique" self-determination in life, disappointment and inclination for suicide, the non-traditional forms of youth’s associating.

Theme 5. Personal atomization and individualism as a specific characteristic of young people’s culture of Kuban at the beginning of the XXI century.

The presence of a living individual Self as a natural premise of individualism. The establishment of a one-child family in Russian society and the problem of birth of the "egoists’ generation", transfer all the traditional forms of natural human relations to the plane of free personal option, free personal decision.

Social-economical stimulation of individualism and atomization of society by possibility of personal survivals and satisfactory social being. The stimulation of social dissociation by information technologies Personal computer and the development of pseudo-interindividual communication. The natural processes of the disintegration of family, traditional ethnical forms of consolidation, the weakening of importance of national culture in the life of a person in today’s Kuban society, the degradation of authority of totalitarian religions and a search for special forms of religiousness, able to satisfy the spiritual requirements of an individual losing and having lost one’s ethnical connection, one’s former social support, the spiritually lonely, but rushing to absolute personal freedom. The expression of individualization and atomization of society into specific forms of modern young people’s culture of Kuban.

Theme 6. The sexualization of modern youth culture of Kuban. The "emancipation" of deviation forms of self-determination of Person.

The protest against limitation of natural sexual attractions by norms of traditional morality and tempers. The conflict of stereotypes of sexual status of individuality and striving for free sexual self-determination of youth. The destruction of traditional forms of ethnical consolidation of population as pre-condition and at the same time the result of sexual emancipation of the person. The reflection of alterations in sphere of sexual self-determination of youth within dynamics of marriage relations. The tendency of speeding-up into metisation of Kuban people population. The changing of youth’s attitude to showings of sexual deviations. The encouragement of sexual freedom and deviated forms of behaviour on the part of arts and market industry of leisure.

Theme 7. The phenomenon of narcissism in young people’s culture of Kuban.

The narcissism as a natural process within personalization of the society. "Self" and "Others". The phenomenon of personal self-sufficiency and consumer’s attitude to conditions of social existence. The limited possibility of satisfaction of needs of Self on the part of other members of society. The birth of spiritual "precipice" between "Self" and other "Selves". The overcoming of insufficient Self by self-satisfaction. The technical possibilities of information systems as one of means to provide for auto-communication and self-satisfaction of person. The computerization of inter-individual relations. The personal computer and rejection of the necessity of person for alive immediate connection with other persons. The phenomenon of the increase of value of virtual world related to that of the real world, of the virtual to real communication the virtual to real freedom of person. The world of computer’s games, Internet and progress of narcissism in young people’s culture of Kuban.

Theme 8. The contradictory nature of young people’s culture. The aggravation of conservative tendencies in self-determination of youth.

The aspiration to preserving the values of the passing society as the reverse of destruction of traditional forms of ethnic and cultural life. The growing of nationalistic moods among the youth of Kuban, the displeasure in destroying of traditional forms of life, ethnic consolidation and culture, the anti-globalist moods. The growth of interest to religion among young people. The increasing of anti-global politisation of certain part of youth.

The personalization of society as a common spiritual source of globalization and anti-globalization movements in young people’s culture of Kuban. The anti-globalization and conservatism as one of possible ways of self-determination of individuality in free democratic society. The necessity of harmonization of opposed social movements. The special role of State and public associations of social unity supporters in overcoming the extremes in young people’s movement and youth culture. The progress of democracy and social welfare as a condition for overcoming the up-to-date form of clashing in young people’s culture.

Workshop: Methods of specific sociological analysis of young people’s culture of Kuban at the beginning of the XXI century.

The presentation of the underlying approaches, the defining of the subject, aims and tasks of the study, the necessary instruments. Formulation of the hypothesis of the research.

The principal phases of realization of the investigation, gathering and processing of sociological information. The methods of providing the necessary authenticity of the results of sociological research. The theoretical sociological interpretation of the data produced as a result of analysis of the subject of the research.

Seminar #1: The youth culture of Kuban as a subject of a sociological study.

  1. The specifics of social and cultural situation in Kuban region of Russia at the boundary of XX-XXI centuries. The generation gap in culture.

  2. The personalization of social relations and culture of the person.

  3. The emancipation of deviant forms of self-determination of the person in the XXI century youth culture of Kuban.

Seminar #2: From transitilogy to positive-sociological methods in studying youth culture of Kuban.

  1. The principal premises of developing transitological research of young people’s culture of Kuban.

  2. The limits of possibilities for transitology studying of young people’s culture of Kuban. The necessity of giving up transitology for positive-sociological research of culture.

  3. The philosophical theory as a methodological instrument of post-transitological sociological analysis of specifics of modern young people’s culture of Kuban.
