Course Title    Historiography of Western Civilization in the Modern Era (XVIIIth - XXth centuries)
Lecturer    Radmila Slabáková
Institution    University Palacký Olomouc
Country    Poland

Aim of the course:

The course offers a general survey of main streams and directories of ideas that influenced the ways of doing and writing history in the modern era. We will concentrate on Western civilization, with a preference on France, Germany, Britain and the USA, countries whose historiography oriented most the ways of modern writing and thinking about history. We will become familiar with the leading personalities of main historiographical streams and schools and will be therefore able not only to connect the content of their studies with their ways of writing and thinking, but also to explain how their production (already known to you) could be influenced by the philosophical ideas formulated inside their respective societies. When possible, we will do not forget to put into relation Czech historiography.

The course will be divided into lectures and seminars – the last ones are intended to discuss the problems treated in advance in the lectures. You are required to do a varying amount of readings outside class (most in foreign languages – English, French, German). The themes will be discussed on the basis of these previous readings, previous analysis of assigned historical sources and individual papers.
