Course Title    Modern Western Historiography in Comparative Perspectives
Lecturer    Radmila Slabáková
Institution    University Palacký Olomouc
Country    Poland

Aim:

The course offers a general survey of main streams and directories of ideas that influenced the ways of doing and writing history in the modern era.

Content:

The concentration will be put on Western civilization, in the first part of the course on French, German, British and US historiography of the 19th century in comparison. The leading personalities of the period will be studied on the example of their major works. When possible, the connection with Czech historiography will be established.

The second part of the course concentrates on the new tendencies in Western historiography in the XXth century. The focus will be put on French and American historiographies, again by example of their major representatives.

The course will be divided into lectures and seminars – the last ones are intended to discuss the problems treated in advance in the lectures. Students are required to do a varying amount of readings outside class (most in foreign languages – English, French, German). The themes will be discussed on the basis of these previous readings, previous analysis of assigned historical sources and individual papers.

Assessment:

The credits will be granted on the basis of active participation in discussions, a presentation, an essay and a final test.
