About us

In September, 2005 Central European University established the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine. The key function of the Center is to promote research and teaching in the field of bioethics and biomedical law. The Center assists scholars and students in their ongoing research and represents the University in international research consortia.

Major Goals

  • to enhance research and the establishment of multidisciplinary research teams in the field of bioethics, biomedical law and biotechnology;
  • to analyze current ethical dilemmas in the field of science and technology and to work out policy papers in the field;
  • to organize workshops with the invitation of outstanding international experts in the field.

Projected Activities

  • Expanding the searchable Bio-Law Database (legislative, legal, ethical and policy documents in the field biomedical law)
  • Initiating empirical and legal policy research in the fields of biomedical law in Central and Easter Europe as well as in a global perspective
  • Organizing multidisciplinary seminars and workshops to foster dialogue between social and natural sciences
  • Establishing networks and partnerships with research centers, universities and NGOs
  • Supporting research of MA and PhD students at CEU and other partner universities
  • Initiating curriculum development, through the establishment of an international network of university professors
  • Fostering the interuniversity exchange of students and professors
