CEU Alumni Chapters and Clubs

Given the unique nature of CEU and the fact that the majority of graduating CEU students move away from their Alma Mater, alumni relations at CEU require an extensive alumni network. This network provides a structured vehicle through which alumni can remain connected to each other and involved with the University.

Guide for Alumni Club Leaders

Whether initiated locally or from Budapest, there should clearly be enthusiasm and willingness of several individuals who will take on the organizational initiative and sustain it. In addition, the interest of a reasonable nucleus of alumni to participate is needed. We offer a website hosting for the CEU Alumni & Friends Association chapters and clubs worldwide at <www.ceualumni.org>. Here you can find all the details about your local alumni chapter or other alumni groups in different countries or develop a website for your chapter or group. The following are a few tips on how to get started:

  • Determine what type of informal/formal chapter or club you would like to establish (e.g. a small club for locals, national chapter, departmental club, professional association, etc.).
  • Contact the Alumni Relations and Career Services for the full listing of potential constituency and determine whether you have a sufficient number of graduates to form an alumni group.
  • Identify a core group of alumni with whom you can have some informal meetings. This will enable you to gauge the interest in and potential for your proposed organization. Where possible, seek the support of the ARCS in identifying potential volunteers for your alumni group.
  • Contact all alumni in your area. A letter should be sent stating your intention to organize a club. You may also wish to include a questionnaire to survey interests. The ARCS may be able to assist with the mailing or with any other initial approach you may choose.
  • After talking with the ARCS and your core volunteer group and assessing any feedback from alumni, you will be ready to hold your first event. Social gatherings such as cocktail parties or dinners are excellent "ice-breakers," at which a CEU representative may be able to speak on current university affairs. At the first event, formal steps may be taken to establish an alumni chapter or club.
  • Alternatively, the formalities associated with establishing an alumni group could be held after the initial gathering. They may include the election of the chapter/club executive committee. The basis for any lively organization is the election of a group of "doers" to the important administrative positions (e.g. chair/co-chairs, coordinators for different geographical or interest areas, secretary, webmaster, etc.).

Timeline for Activites (for Chapter Leaders)

This is a suggested timeline for chapter leaders. You can modify to meet the needs of your chapter.

AUTUMN
A month before the start of the CEU academic year, contact the Alumni Relations and Career Services for a list of newly accepted CEU students to organize a “meet and greet” event. At the event, alumni will share their experience and advice with the students. If it’s not possible to meet face-to-face, then try to connect alumni and students via e-mail. This is also a good opportunity to invite the recent CEU graduates (your new members), so that you can meet them and integrate them into your community.

During the autumn, the CEU Admissions Office will send you a brief e-mail with an advertisement for CEU and call for applications. Forward this message out to all members and ask them to distribute this message to friends, mailing lists/listservs, colleagues, etc. The first application deadline is NOVEMBER 1. If one of your members works at a university, try to put that person in contact with the admissions office so that he/she can have an information session at that university. For more on alumni recruitment activities visit: http://www.ceu.hu/alumni/recruiters.html

WINTER
Organize a winter social event (ice skating, hot wine party, etc.)

In March/April the Alumni Relations and Career Services should send you an update about last year’s award recipients (how they are doing, how they enjoy their studies, etc.). Forward this message out to alumni. Encourage them to give to the Alumni Scholarship Campaign.

SPRING
Volunteer or social event.

Alumni career mentoring. Spring is the time when current CEU students start thinking about what they want to do after they graduate. Encourage alumni to get involved in career mentoring. Perhaps for this coming year we can ask a few alumni to write “Career Profiles” and then put them on the Alumni Affair’s website and forward them to the CEU Career Services Center.

Encourage alumni to attend the CEU Reunion/Gala Dinner in June.

SUMMER
Organize social event with members. Discuss issues related to the upcoming Alumni Leadership Forum. This is a good time to distribute an “alumni survey” in order to get feedback from all members.

Attend Alumni Leadership Forum in June. Send members an update after you return.

Contact the Alumni Relations and Career Services for a list of students from your country who are about to graduate. Send those students an e-mail on behalf of the chapter inviting them to join after they graduate and reminding them about alumni benefits.

Timeline for Activites (for Alumni)

Here is a list of some annual alumni events/activities. Please feel free to send us your suggestions for other events.

AUTUMN
Before the start of the CEU academic year we’ll have a “Meet and Greet” event with newly accepted CEU students. During this event students can ask alumni for advice regarding their studies and life in Budapest.

Recruitment activities. During this time we’ll send you a recruitment update so that you can distribute information to anybody who is interested. Please let us know if you would like to become more involved in recruitment (e.g. if you work at a university and you can host a CEU information session). There is also more information on the Alumni Association’s website: http://www.ceu.hu/alumni/recruiters.html

WINTER
Winter social event.

In March/April we’ll send you an update about last year’s Alumni Scholarship recipients. If you would like to donate to the Alumni Scholarship Campaign, please visit: http://www.ceu.hu/alumni/waystogive.html

SPRING
