Note: Different deadlines are applicable in case of the CEU Business School's programs. For more information about the school visit its homepage.
The admissions process for academic year 2008/2009 will be organized as follows, depending on the application deadlines.
Upon receipt of all application materials each departmental selection committee evaluates candidates on the basis of their past academic performance, strength of recommendations, work experience, the applicant’s expectations of the program and his/her future plans. After this initial evaluation, applicants are either invited to continue with the selection process or are rejected.
Notification of invitation: after February 15, 2008
Notification of rejection: after February 28, 2008.
CEU-administered Admissions Examinations: The institutional TOEFL examination and the department-specific tests will take place on March 1, 2008. Applicants who pass the first stage of the admissions process and who have indicated on the application form their intention to sit for the CEU-administered admissions tests will be notified of the practical arrangements along with the notification of their passing the pre-selection stage.
Note: For those applicants who take the CEU-administered institutional TOEFL on March 1, 2008, previous English test results will not be considered.
Department-Specific Testing: All department-specific testing takes place on March 1, 2008, after the institutional TOEFL. For specific details, see relevant department al descriptions.
- Economics Applicants: Mathematics Examination and Test of Writing Ability
- Legal Studies Applicants: Legal Reasoning Test and Legal Essay
- Mathematics Applicants: Mathematics Examination
- Medieval Studies Applicants: Supplementary Examination
- Political Science Applicants: Test of Writing Ability
In order to help make the best possible decision about your application, some departments require a sample of academic writing completed under exam conditions. At present these include the departments of Economics and Political Science. This requirement is called the Test of Writing Ability (TWA), and it is taken on the same day as the institutional (paper-based) TOEFL test administered in those countries where the institutional TOEFL is used (Central Europe and the former Soviet Union). If you are submitting scores for standard English tests accepted by CEU, you do not need to complete the TWA as these tests already contain a sample of your writing.
The Test of Writing Ability requires you to write a short essay in response to a given question, asking you to assess the impact of one phenomenon on another (for example, the impact of globalisation on education). The essay should be written in a formal academic essay style, and will be evaluated on the basis of your language and writing skills. The TWA is a timed essay; you will have 45 minutes to plan, draft and finish the essay, without using any dictionaries or language books.
Standard Test Scores: Applicants who do not take the CEU-administered examinations will be required to submit standard test scores, as indicated in the General CEU Admissions Requirements and in the departmental descriptions.
The deadline for the submission of these test scores is together with the application documents or latest by February 28, 2008 for all departments and programs.
Upon receipt of applicants' examination scores, each departmental selection committee conducts a re-evaluation of the completed application files and invites selected individuals to continue with the admissions process or rejects their application.
Note: Meeting the minimum language or other test requirements does not automatically result in being offered admission to CEU.
Interviews: Some CEU departments may interview their candidates as part of the selection process. Individual interviews may commence shortly after the review of the application file during Stage One, and continue during Stage Two of the admissions process. The department will contact the applicants to make the necessary arrangements. In the cases of telephone interviews, arrangements may be made to invite candidates to a location where their identity can be verified.
Complete application materials (including language and test scores) submitted by this deadline will be considered competitively, along with the applications submitted in January, on the basis of past academic performance, strength of recommendations, work experience, the applicant’s expectations of the program and his/her future plans. Candidates will be notified of possible interview arrangements directly by the department(s) to which they applied.
Those applicants who have passed the evaluation, testing and interview (as applicable) stages of the admissions process are once again evaluated by a departmental selection committee before the final decisions of acceptance are made. Each applicant is considered on the basis of past academic achievement, strength of recommendations, English language competency, intellectual merit and general compatibility with the goals of the department.
The departmental selection committees may offer an applicant admission, place him/her on a waiting list or decline admission.
Notification: after April 1, 2008.
Important reminder: CEU will accept early applications from candidates interested in receiving an early admissions decision in order to apply for financial aid from a third party. Such applications may be submitted no later than November 15, 2007 and must contain all required documents, test certificates, and an indication of the deadline by which the candidate needs CEU’s decision on admission. CEU will aim to inform these candidates of their admissions status within the time frames needed to apply for such grants.
The CEU Admissions Office issues the official notification of acceptance, placement on the waiting list or rejection. Students who are offered acceptance or are placed on the waiting list will be notified shortly after April 1, 2008. Rejected candidates will be notified in May 2008.
Important Note: CEU does not provide information about a candidate’s passing or failing individual stages of the admissions process, including the final stage, before the respective notification deadlines detailed previously. Further, such information (including any test results) will not be revealed to individuals other than the candidate him/herself (including relatives, friends, employers, etc.).
Candidates who have applied to two separate departments at CEU will receive notification as follows: Admission will be offered on the basis of “first choice” indicated on the application form. If the “first choice” department rejects the applicant, but the “second choice” department accepts him/her, the student will be offered admission directly to his/her “second choice.” If both departments accept the applicant, an admission offer will be made from the “first choice” department, and not both. In exceptional cases, and upon written justification, applicants may be permitted to change the order of their preference—if they notify the CEU Admissions Office by February 28, 2008.
